Are they hand made? All violins are hand made to some extent. It's mostly a question of the maker's skill and motivation, plus the quality of the materials, that makes the difference between a great fiddle and a bad one. At Vita Dolce, we personally choose the best instruments we can find in each price range.      What is ebony, and why should I care about it? Ebony is a very hard, dense black wood with even grain. Pegs made of ebony are easier to tune than softer woods. Fingerboards made of dyed or painted wood wear out quickly. Bow frogs made of mystery wood disqualify the bow from rehairing. "Ebonized" (dyed wood) fittings are a sign of poor quality. Every new outfit Vita Dolce sells has ebony pegs and an ebony fingerboard.
